The Great American Cleanup - Green Starts Here

Plans for the 2019 Great American Cleanup are underway!

Throughout the years we have collected over 447 tons of garbage and yard waste, 10,500 unwanted tires, and 108 tons of electronic waste as well as batteries and lightbulbs.

Help Keep Peoria clean, green and beautiful by volunteering at next year's cleanup.

Your business or organization is invited to be part of the nation’s largest annual community improvement event. Join with friends, neighbors, classmates and colleagues for this citywide litter pickup. It’s a little work and lot of fun!

How can I help?

  • Recruit a team of volunteers from your organization
  • Identify an area in need of cleaning up. It might be your neighborhood, a street or alley, a local park, a parking lot near your business … anywhere litter has collected. Notify us of your target area by returning the enclosed registration form by Monday, April 23.
  • On cleanup day, pick up your complementary supplies—trash bags, yard waste bags and glovesScreen Shot 2018 04 05 at 2.37.28 PM
    • Pick up is 8:00am to 10:00am at Glen Oak Learning Center, 2100 N. Wisconsin.
    • Head to your location and start the cleanup
    • Put landscape waste in the paper yard waste bags, not the plastic garbage bag
    • Disposal - please put trash/litter and landscape waste with your weekly garbage pick up
    • Unwanted tires - the Tireless project will hold its monthly collection of unwanted tires at the Great American Cleanup. First 10 tires are free - $1.00 charge for every tire over 10. Total limit is 20 tires per customer. Neighborhood groups need to register with James via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. Customers must show ID in the form of a Driver's License, State ID or property tax statement. No tires with rims will be accepted. Only passenger and truck tires 17" or less. No oversize tires, including agriculteral and commercial. For more information, contact James Kosner at 309-253-0192.
    • Electronic recycles - fax machines, copiers, telephones, batteries, TVs (60" or less), keyboards, personal electronics, and more! First come, first served. Once the truck is full we will be unable to accept any more.
  • Report your collection—very important! Please let us know how many bags of litter your team collected. We need your results for our records & we must know this information if you are participating in the contest. Call us at (309) 672-6288 or email us This email address is being protected from spambots.
